The Infrastructure and Economic Development department facilitates and monitors infrastructural and economic development initiative. It makes sure they are community demand driven and are meant to transform lives and welfare of people at the grassroots. The purpose of the department is “to facilitate and monitor infrastructure and economic development programs of the local authorities”
The department’s major functions are:
- Backstopping and monitoring of community driven development programmes at grassroots level in LAs
- Backstopping and monitoring of urban development programmes in LAs
Through the enterprise development speciality, the department also covers development programmes that relate to value chain investments and growth centre development which are not only labour and capital intensive but are key to stimulating economic development of an area by creating potential economic growth points and initiate value addition business activities that will improve the capacity of local councils for revenue generation and provision of services. The department achieves this speciality through the Community Savings and Investment Promotion (COMSIP) implementing partner of the National Local Government Finance Committee
The department is headed by the Director of Infrastructure and Economic Development (DI&ED) and has four divisions:
- Urban Development Division
- Engineering Division
- Enterprise Development Division
- Community Driven Development Division
